The Chase

Dog-eared pages and many heavy books
Turning corners, throwing attentive looks
In the library, a cat-and-mouse chase
Ransacking cabinets that are built like a maze
Finally the one that you wanted to pick
When a hand appears, and disappears with a click
If only you were agile, faster, with a long hand
You’d get to take the book that you’d originally planned
Tea and a hanky, settle irritably
Drift off to distant beaches, sandy, dandy, pebbly
Wake up to the ting of a ringing bell
Open your eyes and see – Your heart does swell
The one you wanted in front of you
It’s as though your dream had come true
You carry the book home safe
Turn the pages one by one, give imagination, shape.
